SCAIP Service

SCAIP Service

Overview

The SCAIP Service receives social-care alarm signals over the network and turns them into signals in SBN. SCAIP (Social Care Alarm Internet Protocol) is the standard used by personal and medical alarm devices — pendants, base units, and similar equipment — to report alarms such as a call for help, a fall, or a periodic check-in. The service listens for these messages, records each one as a signal for the operator to action, and sends an acknowledgement back to the device so it knows the alarm was received.

Each incoming message is validated before it is accepted. Messages that are not recognised as SCAIP, or that are missing required information, are discarded and an appropriate response is returned to the sender. Check-in (heartbeat) messages are handled separately, updating the timing record for the device without raising an alarm, so that a missing check-in can later be flagged.

The service can record each signal to more than one SBN database at the same time, so a site running primary and backup databases keeps both in step. When a message indicates that two-way audio is available, the service responds to tell the device it may open a voice call to the monitoring centre.

The service requires a working SBN data-server connection; if the connection cannot be established at start-up, the service logs the reason and stops.

Service Manager

Instructions for installing and interacting with this service is found here.

Service Properties

Only properties specific to this service are listed here. Common service properties (SBN Server connection, Logging, SMTP) are found here.

Conc Id

The concentrator number recorded against each signal this service creates. It identifies where the signal originated when it is processed into an alarm.

Listening Port

The network port the service listens on for incoming alarm messages. Devices must be configured to send to this same port.

SBN Error Account (CID)

The account (CID) used to report problems the service encounters. When set, the service periodically updates this account so an operator is alerted that the service needs attention. Leave blank to disable error reporting.

Error Timeout (In Seconds)

How often, in seconds, the service updates the SBN Error Account above. Only used when an Error Account is set.

Secondary SBN Server

An optional second SBN database connection. When configured, each signal is also recorded to this database, keeping a backup database in step with the primary. Leave blank if not used.

Tertiary SBN Server

An optional third SBN database connection, recorded to in the same way as the secondary. Leave blank if not used.
