Alarm Protocols

SBN Media can decode a range of alarm protocols. This page lists the protocols it supports and the identifier used to refer to each one. Which protocols a line uses is set in the line configuration; the decoding is done by the Alarm Receiver (for alarms over the phone) and the IP Receiver (for alarms over IP).

How protocols are used

  1. Tone and audio protocols arrive on a phone call and are decoded by the Alarm Receiver. You list the protocols a line should expect, in priority order, in that line's protocols setting in the line configuration. The Alarm Receiver tries them in order until it recognizes the one the caller is using.
  2. IP protocols arrive over a network connection and are handled by the IP Receiver.
  3. SIP-based protocols arrive over SIP.

Use each identifier exactly as shown below - they are case-sensitive, and a few are not what you might guess (for example 4-2 and a-number).

Tone and audio protocols

Decoded from a phone call by the Alarm Receiver. These are the identifiers you list in a line's protocols setting.

Identifier

Protocol

contactid

Ademco ContactID (DTMF)

p100

Safeline P100 - care and lift alarms (DTMF)

cpc

CPC device signaling

4-2

4+2 / ELDES

dc03

SIA DC-03 - audio FSK on the phone line

robofon

Robofon - audio FSK

IP protocols

Received over a network connection by the IP Receiver.

scaip

SCAIP - care alarms carried over SIP messages

a-number

A-number dial-in - the caller ID of the incoming call is the alarm account

Protocol options

Most protocols need no settings beyond listing them on a line. A few have their own options, set on the Alarm Receiver:

  1. CPC and TSA have timing settings under alarmreceiver.cpc and alarmreceiver.tsa (resend delays, handshake tone delay).
  2. SCAIP has its own settings under alarmreceiver.scaip - the media reply, callback response, callback addresses, and per-source overrides for multi-tenant setups.

See the Alarm Receiver page for these.

FAQ

How do I set which protocols a line uses?

In the line configuration. List the protocols under the line's protocols setting, in the order you want them tried. See the Line Configuration page.

What does priority order mean?

For protocols decoded from a call, the Alarm Receiver tries the line's protocols in the order they are listed until it recognizes the one the caller is using. Put the protocol a line is most likely to use first.

Where do IP alarms arrive?

Through the IP Receiver, over a network connection - not on a phone line.

The protocol I need is not listed.

Protocol support ships with the build. If you need a protocol that is not listed here, raise it with support.
