Background Tasks Service

Background Tasks Service

Overview

The Background Tasks Service runs scheduled SBN background jobs on a fixed timer. On each timer cycle it asks SBN for the list of background job groups that are due to run, then runs each group as its own independent task — carrying out routine, behind-the-scenes work such as recurring copy tasks, data maintenance, and clean-up jobs that are configured inside SBN.

Each job group runs at most one instance at a time: if a group is still working when the next timer cycle fires, the service skips it until the current run finishes, so long-running jobs are never started on top of themselves. A working SBN data-server connection is required at start-up; if it cannot be established, the service logs the reason and stops.

Service Properties

Only properties specific to this service are listed here. Common service properties (SBN Server connection, Logging, SMTP) are found here.

Timer (In Seconds)

How often the service checks SBN for background job groups that are due to run. Each cycle the timer is paused while the due groups are dispatched, then resumed. Default is 10 seconds.

Max Records

The maximum number of records a background job group will process in a single run. This caps how much work any one group does per cycle so a large backlog is worked through in manageable batches rather than all at once.

Run procedure in debug

When enabled, the background jobs are run in debug mode, producing additional diagnostic output to assist with troubleshooting. Leave off for normal operation.

Verbose Logging

When enabled, the service writes detailed per-group activity to the log, recording each group's run and its results. Useful for diagnostics; leave off for normal operation to keep logs concise.
